Position Summary:

St. Michael Catholic School is seeking an Assistant Principal for the 2024-2025 school year. This person would join the Principal’s Leadership team and serve as an instructional, spiritual, and operational leader of the school.

Key responsibilities:

Support the Principal and carry out duties as assigned by the Principal, including but not limited to the following:

  • Serve as integral part of administrative team and exhibit daily leadership skills that foster collaboration with parents, students, faculty, and parish staff.
  • Demonstrate superior and professional written and verbal communication skills, including timely follow-up, with current teachers, families, and students through calls, emails, and in-person meetings. 
  • Oversee and facilitate the planning and execution of all major StMS events, such as back-to-school events, Grandparents Day, prayer services, dances, pep rallies, graduation events, and Parent Teacher Organization events.
  • Participate in and support the planning of teachers’ ongoing Professional Learning Team meetings, in collaboration with Director of Curriculum. 
  • Secure last-minute substitute requests.
  • Lead school-wide preparation for Cognia reaccreditation review, including training for leadership team, surveys of stakeholders, and point of contact with the review team.
  • Plan for monthly faculty meetings and School Advisory Council meetings that support revising and implementing strategic action plan, as aligned with Cognia recommendations.
  • Conduct ongoing formal and informal teacher observations and visits to PreK – Gr. 8 classrooms to ensure effective supervision and evaluation of all educators.
  • Support the Middle School and Elementary Dean with addressing school-wide discipline and positive reinforcement, including the overall success and mission-focused engagement of student experience.
  • Coordinate communications with families and staff members when the need arises for a student’s discipline infraction(s), including parent meetings, follow-up emails and phone calls, and timely documentation of merits/demerits and appropriate consequences.  
  • Participate in and help facilitate regular leadership meetings and related agendas, including tasks in Microsoft TEAMS.
  • Support teachers in organizing and planning meaningful field trips, in collaboration with the Administrative Assistant and the Finance Office.
  • Support Curriculum Director, as well as the reading and math academic support teachers, to analyze and apply data to meet diverse learning differences of all students.
  • Serve as the administration’s point of contact for the PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) and all related events, and thus the staff representative with the Parish’s Director of Finance and Director of Operations to secure related contracts, complete tasks, and determine the needed budget.
  • Administration’s lead for administering stakeholder surveys, including the analysis, interpretation, and sharing of data and results. Coordinate with and supervise the Athletic Director and coaches to monitor the school athletic program and ensure mission fidelity during all seasons (including pre-season planning, coaches training, etc.) and provide strong administrative presence at events, when possible. 
  • Develop annual budget with the Athletic Director in collaboration with the Finance Office.
  • Collaborate with Director of Curriculum as Testing Coordinator for iReady 3x year to oversee academic testing that evaluates student academic progress and achievement, and in collaboration with Coordinator of Communications, communicate results with broader community.

 Other Duties and responsibilities

 In collaboration with the Principal and various members of the Principal’s Leadership Team:

  • Send out weekly Faculty Bulletin, in collaboration with Office Assistant.
  • Plan and carry out “New Teacher Orientation” training to new teachers to St. Michael School, as well as on-boarding any new hires throughout the school year as necessary, in collaboration with Director of Curriculum. 
  • Continually update the Parent/Student Handbook and the Faculty Handbooks, which outline school-wide norms and procedures that ensure a well-managed, positive, and academically challenging learning environment.
  • Create and organize master schedule, lunch/recess duty schedule, and carpool schedule, adjusting as needed, in collaboration with the Leadership Team.
  • Create job descriptions for open positions, submit job postings to appropriate personnel, and arrange interviews with prospective candidates.
  • Support a positive After School Care (ASC) program through collaboration with the ASC Director.
  • Support teachers in establishing a classroom culture that is respectful of all, focused on the Diocesan curriculum, and reflective of the school’s mission, in collaboration with Director of Curriculum.
  • Support a consistent school-wide discipline policies and the uniform policy, coordinating with the Deans of Middle School and Elementary School to ensure that all teachers follow the policies outlined in the St. Michael School Handbooks, including positive reinforcement.
  • Continue to develop the Middle School electives program and support the overall educational program to provide diverse learning opportunities for the development of the whole person.
  • Foster and cultivate student leadership across grade levels to increase student involvement, ownership, and legacy.
  • Oversee licensure process, including assigning teacher mentors and ensuring license renewal for all St. Michael teachers - including initial licenses for new teachers as needed - in collaboration with Director of Curriculum.
  • Oversee the infusion of Catholic values into the entire curriculum and the integration of Catholic values and beliefs into the overall school culture.    
  • Collaborate with Curriculum Director, as well as Middle School and Elementary Dean, to ensure the continuity and vertical alignment of the academic program across all subjects.
  • Prepare the orders for curriculum materials based on the needs and best interests of each grade level, in collaboration with Director of Curriculum and Deans, regarding total budget for instructional materials as Principal collaborates with Finance Office re: budget and orders.
  • Collaborate with Director of Admissions, including giving tours when needed.
  • Collaborate with Coordinator of Communications and Marketing, including review of documents and support of marketing materials and enrollment management plan for admissions.
  • Support meaningful technology integration across subject areas in collaboration with Director of Instructional Technology.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must possess, or be in the process of obtaining, a Master’s degree (or higher) in Educational Leadership, Curriculum & Instruction, or related fields.
  • 3-5 years of experience in Education, Leadership and Curriculum is highly desirable.
  • Employment is contingent upon applicant satisfactorily passing criminal background and reference checks.
  • Must complete diocese-sponsored Safe Environment Training.
  • Must be a practicing Catholic in good standing who is passionate about living and transmitting the Faith in its integrity.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous years as a successful, effective classroom teacher and/or teacher leadership experiences are highly desirable.
  • Hold a current North Carolina / equivalent out-of-state education license and a Principal License, or in the process of working to obtain an administrator’s license.
