Position Summary

St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Parish of Cary is seeking a full-time Director of Finance to lead the finance department, including but not limited to all accounting activities related to income and expense auditing, accounts payable processing, accounts receivable, human resource administration, payroll, as well as management of tuition payments and scholarships for the Parish schools. The Director of Finance is responsible for conducting financial assessments, developing strategic, long-range financial planning for the Parish, as well as establishing all Parish annual budgets in conjunction with Parish staff, the Parish Finance Council, and the Pastor.  

Key responsibilities

  • Provide leadership to the finance office staff including financial and member data, general ledger activity, accounts payable and receivable, risk management, safe environment record keeping, payroll, tuition, and tuition assistance.
  • Develop, plan, and implement short- and long-range goals of financial goals for the Parish as well as offer financial analysis and current year projections to the Pastor, Director of Operations, and Parish Finance Council.
  • Lead stewardship efforts for the Parish, including best practices for increased giving, online giving, fundraising, advancement, and the Bishop's Annual Appeal.
  • Ensure financial transparency and accountability in the Parish and schools are in line with the expectations, policies, and financial practices of the Diocese of Raleigh and established best practices for accounting and financial management.
  • Lead the preparation of the annual budget for the Parish and schools, ensuring and communicating with pertinent staff that operations stay within budgeted parameters throughout the year.
  • Monitor cash flow, accounts, and other financial transactions as well as administering financial account access and other related accounts.
  • Analysis and interpretation of financial data and prepare financial reports, statements and/or projections on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.
  • Integral in the preparation of materials, agenda, and minutes for the monthly Parish Finance Council meeting and associated subcommittees.
  • Provide leadership to Parish and school staff as it relates to overseeing, preparing, and communicating Parish finance policies and procedures.
  • Supervise staff who manage the human resources needs of Parish and school staff, including recruiting, onboarding, payroll, benefits, medical leaves, and policy implementation.
  • Maintain financial records, contracts, and other documentation as required by relevant diocesan/USCCB policies.

Other Duties and responsibilities

  • Lead Parish development activities such as special events, estate planning, and donor programs.
  • Assist the Director of Operations with Special Projects
  • Other Duties as assigned by the Pastor.

Minimum Requirements

  • Minimum level of Education: 4-year College Degree, preferably in accounting, business, or finance.
  • Minimum amount of Work Experience.
    • Years of related work experience: 5 years.
    • Area of related work experience: Financial experience, and in a leadership position in a related field.
  • Employment is contingent upon applicant satisfactorily passing criminal background and reference checks.
  • Must complete diocese-sponsored Safe Environment Training within 60 days of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Understanding of the Catholic faith and commitment to St. Michael the Archangel’s mission of Worship, Education, and Service.
  • Extensive Knowledge of Microsoft products (especially Excel)
  • Superior attention to detail.
  • Able to learn Diocese specific financial management and membership communication software.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work effectively with a wide range of individuals.
  • Able to collaborate on team projects and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external partners.
  • Takes quick initiative, will have the ability to organize, prioritize, and manage multiple tasks concurrently.
